The money that gets earmarked for these bailouts, how much is it with respect to the numerous other rather "socialist" expenses, such as farm subsidies and the like?

I think we have to know how big a slice of the pie these bailouts are to assign the risk of them really contaminating the economy. I'm asking since I don't know the figures - they are surely on one of the government web sites though.

I really don't think it's clear which is the lesser evil, letting a failure like S&L risk destabilizing the whole economy, or bail them out, letting some guilty parties escape with their skin, and it probably varies from case to case.

People around here throw around the word "socialism", but unless one has lived in Europe they don't know what the word means!
