To make things really confusing, there are three kinds of "ton"

A short ton, is exactly 2000 pounds, used in the US
A long ton, is exactly 2240 pounds, used commercially in the US, and equal to a British ton.
A metric ton (often tonne), is 2204.623 pounds, also 32,150.75 troy ounces, is the weight measurement used in the mining industry.

To answer your question, 1 metric tonne of gold would fit in a cube measuring 1.223 feet per side.
By the way, it would be worth $US8.5M at current prices.
