That said, I think when one group of people ... whether they be African-Americans, Appalachian whites, Native Americans ... significantly lags behind the rest of the population in terms of economic or educational achievement, then I think it is incumbent upon government to extend a hand.

Flap sorry I am getting back to you so late but other duties called. Your response was an excellent one and you are right there are no easy answers. Personally speaking its hard for me to be against affirmative action for those who need it. Those people who have done their best to achieve in spite of huge obstacles should not be turned aside. Maybe the answer lies not as you pointed out in skin color affirmative action but for those who have shown the will and determination to achieve despite the greatest of obstacles.

However one thing that does alarm me is this sense of sending every kid to college. It is very expensive to provide 4 years of education for all. I personally did 2 years at a JC then switched for my last 2 years. The JC was great and I suffered no harm in this approach plus saved a lot of hard earned money. Also we cannot have an army of social workers dependent on government. We need to do a better job of getting young minority kids into math and science. Perhaps because of the bitterness towards whites in the minority community the Asian community should be held up as an example of what can be achieved in this country when your skin color is not white. I read a while back that Asians out earn whites and it is due to their embracing math and science and a great willingness to struggle at these not so easy subjects.
