But I would suggest that the state, while perhaps having no responsibility to correct the past regrettable but innocent errors, in the future use ballots that don't cause confusion and voting machines reliable enough that they don't leave thousands of citizens who tried to vote feeling anguished.

I pretty much agree with that, although viscerally it feels to me "unfair" to those voters whose votes didn't get "read." My reasoning is that the danger of the precedent of it outweighs the loss of those individual votes-- and this election is a statistical dead heat anyway. They could toss a coin, heads is as popular as tails.

Still, there will be deep bitterness however it turns out.
