It's not about convincing the unconvinced or the other side- it's about bonding, in righteous indignation. People LOVE to do that. Heck- that's what religions is all about. "We we we have the truth, they they they are a goin' to Hell..." Same song, different words, with this pitched battle. And of course both sides are singing the same thing- they just can't hear each other because they are so darn mad. And they like being mad. Clearly it feels good to them. We had some little Bushys bonding at the busiest intersection in our town, at rush hour. They nearly caused an accident right in front of me- they were honking and jumping up and down on the sidewalk screaming at the motorists- but clearly they were having a grand time.

It's not my kind of thing. I like a good book, or an art house movie. But group bonding and pro wrestling and religion are clearly important to some people. But you will never understand it- because I submit to you, that it is inherently irrational and not understandable- either from the outside or the inside. Although participants create their own internal logic- divorced from reality, as you might understand it.
