"Would you pay the same price for a reduced service quality?"

ftth- Good points. Now the answer to the question from my perspective is 'depends.' You see when AOL went to unlimited usage back a few years ago, I put up with it because at that time all our business e-mail users were trained on AOL's simply system and there were few alternatives. So we stuck it out for months and months getting those busy signals while they added modems.

Contrast that with my CM service. Just a few months ago I ditched GTE Worldwind because it was terribly slow and the next day, switched back to Time Warner Roadrunner. I've done this four times now and it's just a matter of fifteen minutes for the techs because all the groundwork has been laid.

Now in most CM users case, there are few alternatives to high-speed access. So my guess is they will indeed suffer with congestion until the problems are solved. The CM on it's worst day is still better than dialup. So IMO the MSO will be able to milk each plant upgrade for all it's worth(except where real competition is in place) letting the service go to hell before spending more money.

What I'm really curious about, and I think we may have discussed this before, is VOD. If the current state of the art HFC 750mhz plant might already be pushing the limits of use at a 18% take rate on CMs, then how in the world can all these VOD experiments be taking place? Is VOD a separate issue beyond cable modem data congestion?

I'm very curious as to your thoughts about this as I'm trying to get a handle on whether or not VOD is for real as this will have a major impact on the players such as; SEAC, CCUR, nCube, DIVA, etc. Thanks. -MikeM(From Florida)
