Thanks Capt: I understood most of your discussion. However, what's a central office ? A network of what ? Do they own that network ? My basic problem is understanding what is a network ? I assume it involves lots of central offices but what are those ? I get lost as to why one needs a DSL network to get DSL as doesn't the DSL modem just use the same copper wires that voice is carried over ? When the DSL modem signal leaves a home it goes along that copper wire to where ? I assume the local telephone company and then where ? I assume to COVD's network but not sure ? What's a dedicated line ? Isn't the copper wire already there in the first place as I have already a voice telephone connection why does anyone have to come to install a "dedicated line" ? I see a lot of Verizon DSL TV ads but I haven't as yet seen any COVD DSL ads. You indicated SBC uses COVD, does SBC use any other DSL vendors ? I'll look into COVD's ISP service , thanks for your help.
