<Daniel: You're also citing Tom's famous pre-release writeup of the PII, spec lists availability for the PII-233 as Aug. 97. All in all, another excellent episode in the revisionist history department.>

Whatever. You are bs'ing big time now. The comparison was PPro vs P5. That Tom happens to have included some benchmarks from a third core that was apparently underperforming somehow has nothing to do with anything! Again, PPro vs P5...

You asked me to cite benchmarks and I did. You then say: "aahhh well, that's due to [basically some bug] in the P6". Sigh. What do you want from me? I don't know of anyone who has benchmarks dating back that far, except Tom. If you can dig up some benchmarks taken on software AT THE TIME, then I'd be happy to look at them and comment on them. I also promise that I won't throw around ridiculous accusations, such as you do.

The only 32bit program I saw run side-by-side on the P5/P6 platforms was a 3D game called Descent. It appeared to run at least as fast on the P5 (MMX), but the program did not include a benchmarking function - nor could I guarantee that other components (graphics card, RAM etc) did not skew my perception.
