BWAC, All bs aside, here in south central Pa. there are jobs
aplenty. Some commute to D.C. 90 minutes, Baltimore 60 mins.
, Frederick Md. 30 mins. Lots of jobs, if you feel like
driving.
Being from the good old tourist trap town of Gettysburg,
there are more than enough jobs locally for people to
"survive". Prosper would be another story.
I have a friend that opened a small independent ice cream
business a few years ago. His interviews for employment are
held one on one over lunch, which he buys. He wants quality
at a reasonable price. He had a tough time this past year.
Now we've had an outlet mall open last month, and Pella
Corp. is to open a new window facility next year. My friend
will have a real tough time attracting quality workers while
continuing to make a profit.
Essentially our Economic Development Corp., while trying
to keep local workers local may drive local businesses out
of business.
Then at the same time we have the people who have worked
in the "city" selling their houses there, purchasing houses
here, which are "bargains" to them, and driving up the costs
of services, not to mention school taxes.
Many people here are caught behind the wave, with no way
out.
But, then it is in the demographics isn't it. My wife, an
LPN drives five miles to work and has received three raises
in the last year. If she decided to change jobs, she could
get hired at five different places all within ten miles of
home tomorrow.
I think currently our official unemployment number for
the county is 3.4%. Hmmmmm... sure are a LOT of help wanted
ads in the paper.
