While Massachusetts is quite liberal (I remember well
when the only two Congressional candidates running
in Cambridge were Tip O'Neill and the communist candidate),
it has also a libertarian streak. Its finest hour
occurred when Mike Dukakis' seat belt law was overturned
by a ballot proposition. This should be contrasted with
the apathetic behavior of the CA electorate when
Pete Wilson signed a seat belt law initiated by the Dem.
legislature.
