The first test showed that P4 only had an advantage on specific streaming-related software. My conclusion: Don't buy it. So said Tom, but politely because P4 showed some potential.
The first revision found out, that the only reason why he had to treat P4 nicely was undermined. I concluded that this still didn't change my mind: Don't buy it. Tom concluded the same, but he wasn't polite any more. So much more expensive for no reason is to make the customer look like a fool.
The third revision was the most interesting one, because it shows that:
1) The first version and the first revision are correct: P4 is good for low-cost solutions and bad for high-end solutions, only the price tag must have been set by a drunk.
2) In the future, when we get Whistler up and running, P4 will be faster than the Athlon, but at that time, a new P4 has seen daylight, with a new motherboard.
Since I would never upgrade the OS without also upgrading the hardware (only private consumers have time for that), there is absolutely no reason to buy the P4. Buy an Athlon or SMP P3 now, and buy the P4 when you upgrade to Whistler or Red Hat Linux 8.0. Don't fool yourself. |
