jttmab, what the Florida voting law requires is "substantial compliance." It doesn't require adhering to every jot or tittle of the letter of the law. So this doesn't have anything to do with intent or fairness. It has to do with whether it was illegal for someone other than the voter to fill in the voter registration number on the request for an absentee ballot.

I say no. I say it's illegal for someone else to sign the request for an absentee ballot, or for someone other than the voter or a family member to request an absentee ballot, but this is just filling in a number that was omitted.

I know why it matters to you, because otherwise Gore loses.

As for who was first into court, I don't care. I'm a lawyer, remember? I think going to court to protect your rights is a good thing.
