Barry, you may want to add that during the whole span of the last three thousand years there was a Jewish population in Israel. In the late 19th century, when massive reimmigration of Jews to Israel started, there were very few "Palestinians" in Palestine. The great majority immigrated in the period 1880 to 1940 (together with Jewish immigration) simply because the development occurring in that part of the world created employment and drew non Jews from as far as Caucasia. A very good chunk of the Arab village Abu Gosh near Jerusalem, trace their origin to immigrants from Caucasia late in the 19th century.

All that said, the current "Palestinians", think of themselves as a nation, and a fair solution to their national aspirations should be found, IMHO.
