I agree, the Palm Beach County Board should not have taken time off. However, in near time I suspect investigative journalism will tell us a lot about what actually happened to both the canvassing board members and those assisting in the counting process. What with death threats, intimidation and variations of modern day shunning, those workers were under tremendous stress.
Normally, under recount conditions, both candidates back off and let the recount move forward, fair and square. But this didn't happen that way in Florida. Did it? Those canvassing boards constantly were operating with no reasonable guidance from the secretary of state's office and constantly under threat that their actions would be invalidated by a court or faced with impossible-to-meet deadlines.
For Ambassador-elect Katherine Harris, however, it was a bit easier as she was free from 'mob' behavior. Safe and secure in her office located directly next to Governor Jeb Bush, and assured any actions she'd take would be backed by the GOPwinger-dominated Floridian legislature, it was easier for Harris to hide behind intense security. Ever see, during her press conferences, the guy with the drill sergeant mentality, her front man, who determined who got to ask a quewtion and who did not? |
