ISCC Endorses Canadian Alliance Party for Federal Election

The Executive Committee of the Islamic Supreme Council of Canada has decided to fully endorse the Canadian Alliance party in the upcoming Federal Election.

The Chairman of the ISCC, Mr. Syed Soharwardy, recently participated in a number of meetings in Ontario addressing the responsibilities of Muslims in Canadian society. Mr. Anwar Iqbal Syed was elected as President of the ISCC, Mississauga and Mr. Ishrat Jafri was elected as President of the ISCC, Scarborough. On November 16, the ISCC Ontario Executive met in Mississauga to compare the policies and principles of four major Canadian political parties (Canadian Alliance, Liberal, New Democratic and Progressive Conservative) as they relate to Canadian Muslims. Subsequently, on November 17, a conference telephone meeting was held with Mr. Stockwell Day, Leader of the Canadian Alliance party. The topics discussed included the following:

(i) Employment issues for new immigrants. Presently, many highly qualified immigrants who are accepted into Canada based on their professional skills, end up working as taxi drivers, assembly line workers, security guards, etc., because they lack experience in the Canadian work force. This problem creates serious difficulties for these new Canadians and also impedes the growth of the Canadian economy.

(ii) Racial and religious discrimination against visible minorities including discrimination against Muslim women and girls who wear hair coverings in schools, universities and workplaces.

(iii) The Palestinian issue, which must be resolved peacefully and justly. The ISCC calls for withdrawal by the Israelis from the occupied territories in accordance with United Nations Resolutions.

(iv) Other regions of the world where Muslim civilians are suffering due to military conflicts: Kashmir, Chechnya, Kosovo and Bosnia.

The Muslim leaders who participated in the telephone call were pleased with Mr. Day's answers to their questions and his commitment to work cooperatively on concerns of the Muslim community. The ISCC appreciates the position of the Canadian Alliance on faith-based values and is troubled by negative and intolerant attacks on such values.

The ISCC is a non-profit organization with membership from a broad base of Muslim denominations. Grounded on the principle of truth, the ISCC seeks to dispel inaccurate and unfair stereotypes of Muslim believers. A primary objective of the ISCC is to represent Islam in its true form, which acknowledges God (translated in Arabic language as Allah) as the omnipotent Creator and Sustainer of the universe. Members of the ISCC believe that by living out their faith, they can have a positive impact on Canadian society.
