Dallas, Nov. 27 (Bloomberg) -- Texas Instruments Inc., the biggest of maker of chips for cellular phones, said it has gained 30 percent of the market for chips used in cable modems in less than 18 months in the business.
Texas Instruments, based in Dallas, said it will supply 3 million of the 10 million units expected to ship this year. The company said that increases its market share sevenfold from 1999.
The company said in a statement the worldwide market for cable modem chips may reach 30 million in 2004, citing Patti Reali, an analyst with research group Gartner Dataquest.
Texas Instruments is seeking to develop new markets for digital signal processors as demand slows from cellular phone handset makers such as Nokia Oyj, Ericsson AB and Motorola Inc. In September, Texas Instruments said it expected those customers to ship 400 million to 435 million handsets, after originally estimating 435 million.
Broadcom Corp. is the largest maker of chips for cable set- top boxes and supplies chips to Motorola and Cisco Systems Inc.
The shares of Texas Instruments, which had 1999 revenue of $9.5 billion, rose $2.19 to $46.19 in late morning trading. They had fallen 9 percent this year.<<< |
