TSMC's 12-In. Wafer Fab Begins Pilot Production November 27, 2000 (TAIPEI) -- Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co., Ltd. said its first 12-in. silicon wafer fabrication plant will start pilot production and make its first batch of contracted devices in December. Taiwan's Brilliance Semiconductor Inc. and Altera Corp. of the United States had contracted TSMC to produce chips using 12-in. silicon wafers, TSMC said. Brilliance is a designer of low-voltage synchronous dynamic random access memory (SDRAM) chips, and Altera designs programmable logic devices. Altera executives noted that 12-in. wafers allow the company to develop higher-performance, large-size system-on-a-programmable-chip devices. TSMC president F.C. Tseng said that the 12-in. fab represents major progress in production quality, efficiency and output. The fab, located in the Tainan Science-Based Industrial Park, is Taiwan's first facility of its kind to be approved by IC design houses and will ramp up production to 4,500 wafers a month in the second half of next year.
