KM -- Gold: The truly amazing run was the squeeze of September 1999; GS was caught up in that one, too. The sad thing is that the folks who paid the price for that squeeze were the hedged diggers -- ASL, for example, which was actually a pretty good mining company, but with terrible risk management. Goldman is hanging in there long term, waiting for the central banks to race for the exits as they come to grips with the fact that gold is no longer a store of value, so these peaks and valleys probably don't mean a whole lot to them. But the speculation in the commodity does real and lasting damage to the diggers. The effects of the games Goldman plays are all too real in African nations whose economies depend on the value of gold and the success of mining companies.
