No, there was no Bush request for a recount. His position all along has been that the election ended, he was ahead, there was a recount, he was still ahead, the deadline for certification came, he was still ahead, that's it. Requesting hand recounts would have been inconsistent with that, and he at least has had the virtue of consistency in his position, whatever you may think of it.

Gore, OTOH, has claimed that every vote should be counted, that statutory deadlines shouldn't stand in the way of that, but that all the voters should have their votes counted. But he doesn't act on that claim. That's his (and Lieberman's) hypocrisy. I expect that from Gore. It's very disappointing from Lieberman, who used to be a man of integrity and honesty. We have few enough of those in the political arena that to watch the destruction of one is very sad.
