firewall success at last!

i just got norton personal firewall to install without all of that insane rollback action and meltdown activity. eleven days ago i was ready to swear off symantec products forever, i was so discouraged with their misleading 'win200 compatibility' claims!

the symantec techs were blaming the install probs on a new feature in win2000 called 'windows installer'. i couldn't figure how they could know what to blame it on but not be able to offer a solution.

eventually, in my tweaking travels, i came upon a win2k 'services' guide. i used the article to turn off a lot of background apps. buried deep inside the tweak guide (on page 9 of 11) i noticed 'windows installer'! i simply disabled it, restarted and then went through my normal install routine.

bingo. no problems. norton personal firewall went in like the best behaved software i'd ever installed. after running liveupdate successfully for all of the security updates, i went back into services and turned windows installer back on.

ahhhhh. so nice. and to think that none of the symantec techs could provide me with that instruction.

fwiw....

:)
