Re: The numbers

You're absolutely right, but that's not the real issue. The election was basically a tie and the choice before us is do we accept that it was a tie which by the rules in force on November 7th narrowly favored Bush, or do we engage in an endless attempt to change the rules after the fact so as to get a different result? Would a Gore "victory" by a 500 vote margin somehow be closer to the "truth" than Bush's 500 vote margin? Would overturning the certified outcome somehow make us all feel better? And if "successful" should the contest continue in an effort to flip the result back? Where does it all end given that neither candidate is ever going to be able to garner a lead which is beyond all doubt?

In every election there is a winner and a loser, but it is often in losing that the true character of someone comes out. It is Gore's behavior after election night which is increasingly alienating his supporters and public sentiment. By refusing to acknowledge the political reality of the situation, gracefully concede and plan for 2004, Gore has turned this into an all-or-nothing gamble which will damage not only himself but his party as well. Ironically, by taking a "scorched earth" stance towards the presidency these actions in themselves have disqualified Gore from being worthy of holding the office he so desperately seeks. That is why public support for this quest is rapidly eroding and why he has at most another few days before his own party will pull the plug on him to prevent further damage to themselves.
