hi gottfried,

the best noticeable results i have achieved recently as far as performance enhancement have come from swap file size adjustment.

the rule i have started to follow is roughly this:

less than 256mb ram = 6x ram
256mb ram and greater = 4x ram

when i first used this tweak, i had 128mb ram, so i set the initial and maximum swap file size at 768mb.

yesterday, after increasing my ram to 256mb, i adjusted the swap file to 1024mb.

previously, i had always let windows manage swap file size. i think that is still the case in my win98se setup (i'm just not using that os enough to be motivated to make performance adjustments anymore). the above noted adjustments have been made in win2000 pro, however, the engineer who recommends them also said they are valid for win98.

my disclaimer? my attempts at assistance may have nothing to do with what is in fact going on with your computer.... and ymmv

:)
