Couple articles on DRAM, SDRAM , ESDRAM, DDR, EDDR, DDR2, DDR(II):

DDR RAM - What's it really all about? hardocp.com

Inside the EDDR Chip : Combining DRAM storage and SRAM speed lostcircuits.com

These are by Michael Schuette, apparently webmaster of lostcircuits. I hadn't noticed his stuff before, but he looks like a guy worth following. Pretty technical, they go into gory detail about how DRAM works, and how it will work faster. The DDR(II) direction looks to be a Ramtron/EMS/ESDRAM style DRAM chip with SRAM row buffers. At least that's my summary from a quick pass through, these articles are well written but close to my limit on EE details. I also couldn't quite get straight DDR(II) versus DDR2, I think DDR2 is a relatively straightforward speed evolution of DDR, while DDR(II)=EDDR is the Ramtron-like extension.

It all sounds pretty cool, though. The money for nothing people don't get more than a passing mention. I'd post a note on that thread, but the usual technical idiocy there is now complemented by political flamage beyond even the regular AMD thread. Yuck.

Cheers, Dan.
