keith....margin is a double edged sword.....better to borrow in a constantly rising market, managing it well, and covering as you take profits......best not to use margin in a declining market....

envision it as a business.....not wise to borrow against a failing business, but very wise to fund receivables with borrowing, particularly if you can discount payables....

borrowing is fine if you can offset the cost of funds with gains or return on investment

normal rule of investing is not to meet a margin call...let them sell you out....similar to good money after bad...
