thanks for the langa piece. he sure knows his stuff, doesn't he? and i realize as i read through it that what he suggests and what i am doing really aren't opposed or even that far apart, other than he sets no max. a very real benefit to having tweaked the swap file this way is what fred refers to as eliminating "at least most of the unnecessary disk-thrashing that can happen with dynamic or too-small swap files." no kidding! he adds, "if your hard drive has ever suddenly come to life with a long burst of activity that has no apparent cause, it's probably Windows automatically adjusting the size of your swap file." he's so right, and i didn't realize that that was what i was hearing! truth be told? things are pretty quiet right now. <g>
that's cool that you are trying the bumped up settings. i look forward to hearing if you perceive any improvement. yesterday, right after installing the extra 128mb mem stick, i was a bit discouraged to see some pages filling rather slowly. then i remembered this swap file size experimenting i've been doing. i still had the 768mb setting in place (6x128), and needed to change it to 1024mb (4x256). there was an immediate and very noticeable difference in page filling. in fact, it was the most dramatic difference i've seen in some time. i should clarify that it wasn't all enhancement, insofar as some of what i was experiencing was bogging down prior to the adjustment. i don't know if that makes sense? i mean to say, the difference wasn't all in accelerated speed, because i had slowed down first.
