Digital Island Announces Major Content-Aware Routing Patent Applications Include Improved Web Performance, Digital Rights Management, Localized Marketing and Fraud Detection SAN FRANCISCO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 28, 2000-- Digital Island® Inc. (NASDAQ:ISLD - news), a leading provider of managed Internet infrastructure, announced the addition of another U.S. patent under its growing portfolio of intellectual property. The patent optimizes routing of content and transactions over the Internet based on the location of an end-user. U.S. Patent No. 6,130,890 establishes the methods and procedures for building a geographic atlas of the Internet to link IP (Internet Protocol) addresses to countries, in order to leverage this knowledge to accelerate the delivery of web pages, video files and other digital content by as much as 300 percent.
The underlying technology is used extensively within Digital Island's e-Business Delivery Network, and is the basis for its TraceWare(TM) service. TraceWare leverages the geographic atlas in real-time to enable a wide range of applications requiring country-specific intelligence, including digital rights management, geographic ad insertion and protection against credit card fraud.
``Until now, creating a geographic atlas of the Internet has been a challenge since, unlike telephone numbers, IP addresses do not contain any geographic information,'' said Ruann Ernst chairman and CEO of Digital Island. ``Digital Island's content-aware routing technology enables the network to identify both the geographic origin and the destination of the content, which we use to minimizes router hops and deliver our customers' content through the fastest, most secure path.'' |
