The ACLU, Rosalita

. . . . is the American Civil Liberties Union.

Back when Michael Dukakis was running against George the Elder, the phrase "card-carrying member of the ACLU" became rather widespread. It meant that a person was a died-in-the-wool liberal. Such people support the ACLU's battle for protection of Constitutional rights, particularly those secured by the First Amendment, the freedom of speech and the freedom of religion.

In the late 1960's and the early 1970's, the ACLU fought aggressively to bring abortion rights under the loosely read "right of privacy." More recently, it has waged a constant battle against states implemently the death penalty.

In my opinion, the most proactive, well-meaning organizations operating in the United States are the ACLU and Amnesty International.
