I totally agree with you about saving pennies worth of disk space. Your computer, with 28gb of disk and 4gb of system, reminds me of wearing mother's high-heels when playing house as a little kid: tiny foot in a big shoe.

My motivation wasn't really to squeeze every last byte of disk space so much as it was an attempt to keep my data close together on the drive. A really huge swap file would require the disk heads to travel further when moving from the used portion of the swap file to other types of data. I picture this as someone constantly flying from New York to Los Angeles finding some way of relocating the second office to New Jersey.
