With all due respect for a large subset of the population, whether you like it or not abortion is not a moral issue. I have learned to accept this and do not equate it with a governmental issue that is tearing away the moral fiber of the country and one that will lead to a Hitler or Stalin in the Whitehouse.

I think you hit the nail on the head by saying that these people rose to power very quickly. Such a thing would not happen in America and perhaps this is more what I meant.

One can always argue that society could somehow change in such a way so as to slowly erode our freedoms. In fact it already has. But my point was only to refer to those such as Stalin, Hitler and Hussien. I believe that we would witness significant governmental instability before such an event occured. The history of our country and our constitution would demand it because of the division necessary for this to occur.

I'm not suggesting that it is impossible over the course of generations but I do feel that it is highly unlikely. Although we have had some erosion of our freedom, I don't believe we have had a significant errosion of our truly basic freedoms. And those freedoms that we have lost have generally been at the expense of other freedoms we have gained. JMO.

Don't get me wrong. I don't like seeing my right to bear arms or my free speech rights to be trampled on more than the next guy. But this country is the best thing going. I'd fight for it anyday especially if I saw a lunatic like Hitler in the driver seat. I think there is a large enough subset of the population who would agree with me and would fight to see to it. Perhaps this should be a focus in educating our young people.
