LONDON, Nov. 29 /PRNewswire/ -- Gearing up for next-generation wireless Internet services will mean European operators spending more than US$ 125 billion over the next seven years, according to the recently-released European Next Generation Wireless: Licensing, Infrastructure & Deployment study by The Strategis Group. These investments will nearly triple the amount of installed base-stations by 2007, from the current count of approximately 265,000 to over 720,000, according to the report.

"Making the next generation wireless Internet vision a 'here-today' reality is a significant financial and logistical exercise for the operators," said Jake Saunders, The Strategis Group's European Director. "2.5G technologies such as GPRS, and 3G W-CDMA technologies in particular, place extraordinary demands for base-station and switching equipment. If next generation wireless Internet services are to live up to expectations, operators will need to install a dense array of standard, micro and pico base- stations. This is because wireless Internet access speeds not only depend on how fast the end-user is moving, but also how far he or she is from the base- station."
The determined scrabble for optimum line-of-sight locations has already been witnessed with GSM. With the advent of W-CDMA, this factor could become a key differentiator in the quality of service and speed of service deliverables for 3G operators.
"National governments have taken a hands-off attitude to enforcing collocation of base-stations," said Jamie Moss, Telecoms Consultant with The Strategis Group. "That position may have to change, as optimum sites get snapped up by dominant operators. New entrants will definitely need to move quickly."
The Strategis Group developed an operator-orientated infrastructure model that reflects the expected roll-out of 2.5G and 3G base-stations, voice and data switches. For example, the model discerns between the roll-out of base- stations for urban capacity constrained deployment as well as rural coverage, which is influenced by the amount of terrain to be covered. Different pricing parameters for standard, micro and pico base-stations were also taken into account in the revenue modeling.
