[World DRAM Price] DRAM Prices Still Declining; Recovery Seen After March 2001
November 29, 2000 (TOKYO) -- The worldwide decline in DRAM microchip prices hasn't yet stopped, and on some days the spot prices of 64Mb DRAM chips have even fallen below US$3.
CPUs and chipsets for PCs have entered a period of production adjustment, starting earlier this month, and makers have revised downward their plans for the period through February 2001. Even if the inventory adjustment for DRAMs ends and demand hits a bottom within the year, a full-fledged recovery for DRAMs isn't expected until after March 2001.
According to a survey of world DRAM prices conducted by ICIS-LOR, which has bases in London, Houston and Singapore, the rolling average prices of 128Mb DRAMs (PC133, 16M x 8) for large users in the 30-day period ending Nov. 10 (from Oct. 12 to Nov. 10, 2000) reached US$13.82 in North America, US$11.49 in Europe, and US$15.40 in Asia. Compared to the previous week (30-day rolling average for the period ending Nov. 3, 2000), these prices represent decreases of 3.49 percent for North America, 11.78 percent for Europe, and they remained at the same price for Asia.
As for prices of memory modules, the spot prices for 128MB DIMMs (PC133) declined 8.36 percent from the previous week to US$73.14 in North America, they fell 10.12 percent to US$70.45 in Europe, and declined 9.75 percent to US$64.51 in Asia.
