I guess one's view on that is dependent on who is leading and who is trailing. Every close election I have ever followed(at all levels of govt) has always been decided by a manual count of the votes...I guess now that method has no validity.

Of course no recount has EVER had the implications this one does. That makes it different.

The fact that Gore requested only a partial recount made it suspect as well. This gave the impression from the start that he wasn't interested in fairness, only what would benefit him.

The standards of counting were never established BEFORE the counting began. This made it suspicious.

I dare say that no election you have ever followed had a partial recount with uncertain and evolving standards.

And please don't fall back on the "Bush could have requested a recount" line. The leader never does. If Bush falls behind on some future recount, I believe he should have the opportunity to contest just like Gore has while he was behind.
