There is much evidence that the mass extinction event known as the Permian (about 100 million years ago) came after a period of global warming. It seems that a few degrees rise in temperature stops melt/freeze cycle that powers the great ocean currents and upwellings that cycle deep nutrient rich water to the surface. The result is stagnant oceans which become saturated with carbon dioxide.

A trigger event, perhaps a volcano perhaps a meteor would eventually cause the oceans to effervese. The carbon dioxide would saturate the upper water and finally the atmostphere. The next result is 90% of all forms of life are dead. But why worry about that until we
