Shares of Altera Corp.(NasdaqNM:ALTR -
news) tumbled 23 percent in after-hours trade on Wednesday, after the
chipmaker said fourth-quarter revenues and earnings would be flat from the
third quarter, citing sluggish November sales and an unanticipated backlog of its
products.

Personal computer maker Gateway Inc.
(NYSE:GTW - news) warned on Wednesday its fourth-quarter sales and
profits would fall far short of Wall Street estimates, citing slack holiday sales
that could spark a PC price war in the New Year.

Gateway's stock got hammered in after-hours trading, dragging other personal
computer maker stocks down as well.

..... analysts cautioned - don't read to much into these corporate earnings warnings or any of the countless other indications that the economy is weakening because the only reason stock prices are falling is Al Gore.
