That show is about my day job--I'm a policy wonk, after all, and in a previous life I was actually one of the minions you see in the background. But it's a wonderfully idealized portrayal--the anti-Clinton White House, with all the brains intact but devoted to noble public ends, not scumminess and politicking.

It's astonishingly accurate and intelligently done; the only major differences between the show and the real world at its best are that on the show the people are prettier and nicer; the issues are wrapped up quickly, neatly, and dramatically; and idealism gets to win most of the time. Oh, and the cast of characters is much larger in real life--for example, there's a whole separate foreign policy staff, which is usually much less political than the regular WH staff.

But people like Sam Seaborn are somewhat true to life--the WH speechwriters I've worked with are phenomenal wordsmiths, truly a pleasure to watch in action.
