Red Chinese General Probes U.S. Military Posts
The top Red Chinese general charged with enforcing Communist ideology, accompanied by a contingent of People’s Liberation Army (PLA) colleagues, visited the United States from October 21st until November 4th as guests of the Pentagon in what some defense officials fear was a covert intelligence mission to ascertain potential weaknesses in U.S. military morale.
Prior to the visit, one U.S. official told Washington Times reporter Bill Gertz: "They believe one of America’s biggest weak points is morale that can be crushed in a surprise, massive attack. That’s what their goal is for the visit. It’s an intelligence collection mission." Which should hardly come as a surprise since, as the Associated Press reported on October 21st, "China’s armed forces are seen as preparing for expected U.S. intervention should Beijing’s generals launch an attack on Taiwan, the wealthy democratic island China claims and threatens to take by force if peaceful means fail." On October 31st, a Reuters dispatch also recalled that U.S. defense officials "have expressed concern over Chinese purchases of advanced Russian warplanes and other weaponry."
That same day, General Yu Yongbo met with Defense Secretary William Cohen at the Pentagon, where they discussed sundry issues related to security, including the status of Taiwan and the American view that the differences between Taiwan and Red China should "be resolved peacefully." Deep down, General Yu undoubtedly agrees, since the Communists define "peace" as an absence of resistance to Communism.
