It appears that there is less supernatural activity, but then, it was never exactly common, or it would not have marked out Abraham and Jacob, for example. Besides, if one believes more recent testimony, the modern correlate is apparitions of the Virgin, as at Fatima. On the other hand, there are now books that claim that angels are all around us, although not necessarily visible, so I suppose it remains a controversial area.
I am not sure that there is any extended description of the "descent into Hell".
