Denial, pure and simple. I couldn't agree more, Gottfried. A equally troubling paraphrasing of your question: How could so many smart people on the SI AMAT board have been so persuasively wrong? Jon Joseph's outlook was very, VERY accurate. There remains as much pure and simple denial the SI AMAT thread as you'll find anywhere. (I promise I won't mention the 'H' word)
