Nichia Wins 2nd LED Patent Suit Against Toyoda Gosei

Friday, December 1, 2000

TOKYO (Nikkei)--The Tokyo District Court on Thursday ruled in favor of Nichia Corp.'s claim that Toyoda Gosei Co. (7282) infringed on its LED (light-emitting diode) patent, ordering Toyoda Gosei to pay Nichia 104.86 million yen.

The decision is the second in a series of nine related patent infringement suits filed by Nichia against Toyoda Gosei. Nichia won its first case in the same court Aug. 31.

Thursday's decision relates to technology involving gallium-nitride-based compound semiconductor LED light sources for mobile telephone screens and large displays. Toyoda Gosei, which had already stopped manufacturing and selling the disputed products, filed an appeal with the Tokyo High Court on the same day.
