Steven M. Fortuna, who follows Dell for Merrill Lynch, said the company "is a terrific long-term opportunity."
Mr. Fortuna was one of the few analysts to continue supporting Dell after the company lowered expectations for growth this year. "You can't give up on Dell because their execution is always excellent," he said.
And Dell can be ruthless on pricing.
Speaking earlier this week at a Credit Suisse First Boston conference in Scottsdale, Ariz., Michael Dell, chairman and CEO, said increasing competition only steels the company's commitment to staying on top.
"We let these guys up off the mat, and we're going to get them back down there," Mr. Dell said. Dell is the No. 1 U.S. computer maker, and Compaq is No. 1 worldwide.
He also said the company is standing by its estimates for the current quarter."
