Lucent, Nortel, others win AT&T Wireless contracts

REDMOND, Wash.--AT&T Wireless Group, the mobile telephone unit of AT&T, selected Lucent Technologies, Nortel Networks, Ericsson and Nokia as equipment suppliers for a planned high-speed data network.
Terms of the agreements weren't disclosed. Ericsson, the largest maker of wireless-phone equipment, will provide mobile phones and radio base-station systems, Ericsson spokeswoman Kathy Egan said. Nortel, Lucent and Nokia are supplying various types of equipment, the companies said.
AT&T Wireless, based in Redmond, Wash., plans to launch a new network over the next few years to deliver wireless voice, Internet and video services to consumers at higher speeds than current information networks.
"It's all trial at this point," Stifel Nicolaus & Co. analyst James Stone said. "They are going to try the four different systems and see if they work."
Lucent, the largest phone-equipment company, will make the base-station field equipment for the so-called third-generation system, said Mary Ward, a Lucent spokeswoman. Stone said he won't change his "hold" rating on Lucent shares based on today's announcement.
"The question now is how long that transition will take from what we have now to the third generation. My feeling is it will be a three- to five-year process," Stone said. |
