By Reuters staff

28 November 2000

The Australian Communications Authority said on Tuesday that Cable & Wireless Optus Ltd had paid A$37 million in an auction for 27 GHz spectrum to be used to deploy a local multipoint distribution system (LMDS) network.

C&W Optus, which has issued an information memorandum to overseas and domestic carriers for the sale of all or part of its business, said that LMDS network would deliver high-speed data and voice, particularly to many regional centres.

LMDS is a terrestial or fixed wireless communication service.

Shares in C&W Optus, which is 52.5 percent-owned by Cable & Wireless Plc, closed 11 cents higher at A$4.18.
