Considering the fact that the market ultimately determines interest rates and that Greenspan usually follows it's direction, I don't see how the FED could do anything but provide some relief. There is currently a 100 basis point gap between FED funds at 6.5% and the 30 year Treasury at 5.58%. This is an insane inversion of the yield curve that suggests that Greenspan will have to cut the FED funds by at least 25 basis points (if not 50 basis points.) I think he needs to redress the disastrous decision in June to increase FED funds by 50 basis points on an immediate basis to ease the pain of his soft landing.
