BROSSARD ANNOUNCES A LEADING-EDGE PROJECT AND A REVOLUTIONARY TELECOMMUNICATIONS NETWORK
BROSSARD, November 22, 2000 — The mayor of Brossard, Paul Leduc, today launched a leading-edge telecommunications project that will see a new residential (3,000 properties), commercial and industrial zone equipped a fibre optics telecommunications infrastructure alongside its electrical power grid. Each of the homes will benefit from a broadband telecommunications link capable of transmitting voice, sound and images. This state-of-the-art telecommunications network will bring a taste of the future to the daily lives of neighbourhood residents.
“There are very few municipal telecommunications projects as advanced as this one in Canada today,” said Mr. Leduc. “Brossard is setting the standard in this field, and we’re proud to take the lead with our ‘wired’ residential initiative. Roads and sewers might have been the basic municipal infrastructure in the 20th century, but the 21st century will be defined by the ‘infostructure’ of leading telecommunications and information services. Our economic and social future will rely on efficient links and networks connecting citizens to schools, hospitals, businesses and their homes.”
Brossard intends to make the most of its leading position to attract high-tech businesses and their employees to its territory. “An advanced telecommunications network integrated with the electrical power grid will have a major impact on the development of the South Shore,” the mayor continued. “Our city is definitely at the forefront with this innovative residential, commercial and industrial project. Brossard sur le Golf will have everything it needs to become a genuine ‘intelligent community.’ ”
A first for Hydro-Québec
For residents of this new neighbourhood, fibre optics and Hydro-Québec power grid will ensure access to new services. “The integrated aspect of the Hydro-Québec proposal was the critical factor in our selection,” added Mr. Leduc. “Furthermore, as the owner of the fibre optic network, Hydro-Québec subsidiary will rent bandwidth to service providers. This represents another advantage for property owners.”
“We are thrilled that Brossard has chosen our company,” said Gilles Bellemarre, project director for Hydro-Québec. “This project fits very well with our strategic plan and our commitment to improved customer service—more specifically, our decision to deploy more underground systems.”
Opting for superior technology
Real estate developer Groupe Molesini Sigler will coordinate and supervise construction of the 3,000 residential units—single family dwellings, in rows or clusters—in Brossard sur le Golf. It will also work with Brossard in selecting a supplier for the advanced telecommunications network.
“The technology we have chosen will bring considerable benefits to the municipality and property owners in Brossard sur le Golf,” said Paolo Molesini, vice-president of Groupe Molesini Sigler. “We are thrilled to be working in partnership with Hydro-Québec. The Hydro proposal also has the advantage of keeping urban structures to a minimum, given that most of the components in the fibre optics network leading to each home will be underground.”
The ground breaking ceremony for the Brossard sur le Golf housing project is scheduled for March 2001, with owners taking up residence in July 2001.
“At a time of major upheaval for Quebec municipalities, our intelligent community project attests eloquently to the successes and accomplishments that lie within the reach of medium-sized cities,” concluded Mayor Leduc.
