One of the inevitable consequences of the maturing of the PC market is that it has become a routine rather than a special purpose for most families. I remember very clearly Christmas 1968 when my father bought my mother one of the first microwave ovens. Neighbors would drop by to watch water boil in amazement and my grandparents were utterly mystified by it. Those older will have similar recollections about the first television to show up on their block. The point is that in the early adoption cycle a PC purchase is a big event and often a centerpiece holiday purchase. That's no longer the case. People buy PCs routinely when they are needed and they are no longer considered "special purchases".

So is it a terrible surprise that the Friday after Thanksgiving is no longer critical to annual consumer PC sales? I don't think so. The market needed a trigger for a selling climax and this one was conveniently at hand. There's no need to read much more into it than that.
