But I am unclear on the mechanism by which the subtle mind can carry-over memories (or even itself) from one lifetime to the next.

There are ample reasons and mechanisms for communication to exist across time and space barriers. The reasons are simple: it could be adaptive for the greater success of "life" - a process which I believe may operate by a set of principles that are a superset of what we understand now as "physics", including elements we currently describe as "random". The mechanisms are already in place and understood: quantum level fluctuations.

The barriers we see are largely illusory. The only thing that keeps me from falling to the center of the earth are electromagnetic fields. Similarly, it is not clear whether the brain generates or receives consciousness. Science found recently that there are nano-scale structures (the cyctoskeleton) in the brain. While these are biochemically active, we don't know what their function is. There is certainly the possibility (due to the small diameter yet long coherence length of these structures) that these could allow for the exchange of quantum information.

I doubt the great consciousness is without content. I imagine it to be like digital cable with nearly infinite channels of widely varying bandwidth. To use a crude analogy, the cockroach is equipped with a 300 baud modem and I've got broadband. Other creatures have yet different bandwidths.

Maybe this is all a lie - a compassionate lie, as you say. I saw a bumper sticker "Don't judge me by my car, my real treasure is in Heaven." I think this is a fraud. We are here to live. TO LEARN. By eliminating the most important task here (spiritual development and growth) and reducing it to some shrink-wrapped religion we are short changing ourselves (IMO). I would never force this belief on anyone because it is unprovable.
