Do you have to run your own mailserver for that to work?

Nope.

I always use Hypermart for my domains (I've about a dozen of them) and they forward to an alternate email address automatically.

What's cool is that it's a kind of wild-card thing. If, for example, you registered catlady.com, then email coming to *any* address @catlady.com gets routed to you. So if you signed up for SI with an email addy of "siliconinvestor@catlady.com", and don't use that address anywhere else, if you get email to that address, you know someone got your addy from SI.

If you own the domain name, you can have any name you want in the email address (before the "@" part) and you'll get the mail.

And if your email software can do it (Eudora does), you can make a separate folder for each address and have it filter incoming mail to each folder depending on the email address it was sent to.

That's also how I keep my car-related and motorcycle-related stuff separated from everything else.
