<<<But this also leaves me in a quandry. If my innate sense of "goodness" is flawed, how can I recognize what and where God is so that I can bring myself more in line with Him?>>>

Go back to where you said we can get closer to God through reading his scriptures because that's certainly a good starting place.

<<<How am I to know or discern which one comes from God/Good unless I already have that innate sense of goodness that I was striving for in the first place?>>>

Do you have any conscience that you have sinned against God? If not then you will just have to take it at face value that your innate goodness or righteousness are unacceptable in God's sight. There is a remedy however because what is impossible with men is possible with God.

Please accept the Lord Jesus into your heart today, don't wait, don't barter, don't hesitate because the bible assures you that if you don't accept him when the door is open then when he shuts the door all those on the outside will never be allowed into his presence no matter how much they plead with him.
