Hi Greg,

I threw in the towel Monday when I found out the background of Judge Sanders Sauls. He's going to grind on this thing until his decision is an irrelevancy. That's not to say the Republicans haven't put on a disgusting spectacle of rabid dissembling for the sake of winning. I was very gratified today when a Texas Republican woman who lives about 15 miles from Gov. Bush's ranch got on the Republican phone line at C-SPAN and expressed her disbelief and dismay that her party had been hijacked by a bunch of liars. This is exactly the same sort of opinion from a rural Iowa Republican that I heard last week, whose family had voted the straight Republican ticket since 1854 said that 2000 was most likely the last time he would vote Republican. The Party has simply drifted too far from the ideals of an earlier age. Today, it is too partisan and petty, having let ideals of social justice and concepts of fair play get swept out the door, as a new and rabid vociferousness has settled in to replace comity and statesmanship.

I'm certain the Republican leadership is going to become alarmed on November 6, 2002, when they discover just how much they gave up in terms of credibility with their less partisan voters in order to take this election by skullduggery and legal maneuvering. I'm predicting this will be one of the most Pyrrhic victories in American electoral history.

The Republicans couldn't find a better way to mobilize their opponents than this episode of venal dishonesty.

Best, Ray
