"reasonable nice conscientious people" - quite possible, why not? I am sure you would find many of them quite likable people should you get to know a bunch of them personally. Job is job, party is party...
"who have nothing but our best interests at heart" - definitely not, why would they. Our interests are different from theirs and often contradicting. What I am saying is: as long as you recognize this contradiction of isterests, how can you get mad at them for doing what serves their interest and not yours? You are not going to do intentionally what is in their interests, right? So aren't they, and there is no room for emotions in this regard. Just read the tape or chart and trade. Supply and demand rule this game. Your skill to read supply/demand ratio is what determines your success. Period.
About brokerage service... well, just try demo of any of good direct access brokers (MBT, Castle, Cyber), you will see the difference. Again, I am not saying IB is bad... I hear different opinions on them, including very good, and I do not have personal experience with them... but their platform is more limited comparing to those full direct access. I also know they are going to roll out new software soon, may be it will level the field.
